David Carruthers, the former CEO of online gambling site BetonSports, was freed recently on a $1 million bond after spending almost a month behind bars. He was nabbed by authorities on a Texas airport on charges of fraud and racketeering.

Carruthers was freed after a hearing before US District Judge Mary Ann Medler. Carruthers had been hoping to get out as early as Monday, but some technical details, including the installation of a dedicated phone line on the place where he will be staying at, needed to be worked out.

The charges made against Carruthers is part of a 22-count indictment against BetonSports PLC. The case is being prosecuted by US Attorney Catherine Hanaway. Carruthers was CEO of the company until after his arrest, when he was fired.

The news of his arrest caught the attention of the whole online gambling industry. BetonSports, following the high-profile arrest, decided to pull the plug on all its US-based operations.

Carruthers will live under house arrest in the St. Louis area until his trial. The first hearing in the trial is set for Aug. 21.

Under the terms of his bond, Carruthers will be residing in an upscale hotel in the suburb of Clayton, he however, will not be allowed to leave the premises except for court appearances, meeting with his attorney or medical emergencies. He will likewise be wearing an ankle bracelet to enable authorities to monitor his whereabouts.

During the hearing, Carruthers asked the judge only one question: “The house incarceration: Is that 24 hours a day?”

Carruthers'’ attorney Scott Rosenblum said his client is not a flight risk.

“He’’s looking forward to responding to these charges in court,” Rosenblum said.
